ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. – Motorcycles are displayed during the Motorcycle Mentor Ride at the Freedom Community Center April 11, 2014. The event was hosted by the 97th AMW Safety Office and offered motorcycle safety briefings, which highlighted personal protection equipment to include head protection, eye protection, protective clothing, foot protection, and garment and motorcycle visibility. Various riding hazards such as weather conditions, road conditions, traffic conditions, alcohol use, fatigue and wildlife were also covered. Being aware of weather conditions and the threats they pose to motorcycle riders is knowledge valuable to both beginner and veteran riders. Daniel Smith, 54th Air Refueling Squadron superintendent, rides his motorcycle during the Motorcycle Mentor Ride at the Freedom Community Center April 11, 2014. The motorcycle event consisted of a safety briefing, a blessing of the bikes, a mentor ride, and local vendors to demonstrate new motorcycle products. The 97th AMW Safety Office offered motorcycle safety briefings, expressing that the best thing Airmen can do to stay safe is to use personal risk management for all activities. The seminar discussed the 101 Critical Days of Summer which are known to Air Force members as the days of summer with the greatest chance of accidents. The Air Force’s vision is to ensure Airmen have zero preventable fatal mishaps and an injury-free summer. The objective of the Motorcycle Mentor Ride is to call attention to the tragic loss and/or injury of Airmen during summertime and to make them realize that safety is personal for their families, friends, coworkers and themselves. Airman of the Month

William McCarter, 97th Maintenance Directorate aircraft worker, is responsible for observing and assisting journey-level aircraft technicians in servicing, ground handling, inspecting, troubleshooting, removing and replacing airframe assemblies and components, as well as performing operational checks of these systems. A product of the Grow your Own Mechanic program, McCarter completed his career development courses within four months with a final exam score of 94 percent. McCarter is pursuing higher education in aerospace engineering and is still working on his degree at this time. He is a mentor to local high school students with a similar passion in robotics, volunteering at the robot competitions held at Altus High School.
