VERNON, Texas – Col. Ted A. Detwiler, 97th Operations Group commander, hands Peggy S. Harris, a World War II widow, an American flag during a Vernon High School assembly held to honor U.S. military veterans, Nov. 12, 2012. Peggy’s husband, 1st Lt. Billie D. Harris, was flying a mission over Nazi-occupied France when his plane was shot down and crashed into the woods near a small town in Normandy. He never returned home. Altus Fitness Center kicks off the “Lift a C-17” competition

ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla.—Israel Sorcia, a civilian spouse, lifts weights at the Altus Fitness Center, Sept. 7, 2011. Sorcia is taking part of the “Lift a C-17” competition that runs from September 1st through October 31st. The objective of the competition is to promote health and wellness by encouraging individuals to push themselves in the weight room. A C-17 weighs approximately 282,500 pounds. The first female and male to finish in each category, beginner and advanced, wins a free t-shirt. The beginner category must lift 141,250 pounds and the advanced must lift 282,500 pounds.
