Members of Mobility's Hometown celebrated Asian American and Pacific Islander
(AAPI) Heritage Month during the month of May. Throughout the month, various
activities gave AAPI Airmen the opportunity to share their traditions and culture with the
community. One of these activities was a live karate demonstration led by Sensei Krista
Camarillo of the SIMS Martial Arts Academy in Altus, Oklahoma.
The demonstration took place at the base fitness center and featured seven karate
students ranging in experience from beginner white belt to advanced blue belt.
Members learned that the word ‘Karate’ is a Japanese word meaning “empty hand,”
which is a striking art that places emphasis on the body’s power at the point and instant
of impact.
