Every year Senior Master Sergeants test for the highest rank in the enlisted force structure and only the top one percent make it. Three of Altus AFB's Senior Master Sergeants earned the spot as the top one percent and were recognized during a Chief Recognition Ceremony at Club Altus Jan. 25.

Senior Master Sgt. Michael Cumberland, 58th Airlift Squadron superintendent, Senior Master Sgt. Jerry Pier, 97th Logistic Readiness Squadron superintendent and Senior Master Sgt. Jeffrey Wilson, 97th Operations Support Squadron superintendent were recognized by a crowd of Altus AFB personnel.

When a base has Chief Master Sergeant selectees, a ceremony is held to recognize them and their accomplishments. Not only does the ceremony recognize the Chief selects, but it also drives Airmen who want to achieve their goal of becoming a Chief.

"I think it's an outstanding opportunity for people to come out and recognize the newest Chiefs as well as to be a part of an enlisted culture," said Chief Master Sgt. Tamala Hartz, 97th Security Forces Squadron manager. "When you reach the rank of Chief, it's a significant accomplishment and it should be celebrated by all ranks."

Becoming a Chief comes with many new challenges, and facing those challenges head on helps build a great leader.

"Challenges with being a new Chief include accepting your new responsibilities," Hartz said. "I look at my squadron and I see Airmen who have the potential to be a Chief and want them to come here so they can be inspired."

Wilson left a tip for Airmen who want to become a Chief someday.

"An Airman's focus shouldn't be on just their job but understanding the whole person concept such as education, getting involved in the wing, their squadron and enjoying every minute because it goes fast," said Wilson.
