5/17/2010 - ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Altus Air Force Base hosted a Retiree's Appreciation Day, Saturday 15 May, showcasing base resources available to retired military.
"What we're trying to do is rejuvenate the activities for retirees that the base is providing. In past years it's been kind of ignored and forgotten and so what we're trying to do is get it going again." said Kenneth Morrison, retiree affairs director.
Nine base agencies including the medical group, legal, security forces, and Tricare, gathered in the Club Altus ballroom to present information and offer face-to-face contact for questions and concerns.
"It's really been helpful to us so far. We found services we didn't know we could get for eye care!" said Ron and Diane Ogden, retirees.
Retirees used the opportunity to follow up with medical claims questions, register with the Defense Biometric Identification System, and talk with legal affairs. Club Altus supplied a buffet of food and drinks for those who attended.
Mrs. Gay Stewart from the Tricare Service Center, said she received many questions about eligibility for dental benefits, survivor benefits, and the transition from Tricare Prime to Tricare for Life. That transition is of particular interest to those newly retired, or about to retire, like Master Sergeant Keven Ward, 97th Medical Group, Public Health Office.
"I am currently active duty, not retired, but I'll be retiring 1 October 2010, so I wanted to come out to this event today and see what activities they have going on for the retirees here in the area, so I could kind of be able to support and know what's out there for resources," said Ward.
Planners for the event intend to hold more of these appreciation days, invite even more base agencies, and are considering finding a larger venue, if needed.
