The U.S. Air Force Band of the West from Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, visited the Mighty 97th and downtown Altus to play holiday songs, Dec. 14, 2021.

The USAF Band of the West performed at the Child Development Center, Club Altus, the 97th Mission Support Group, the Base Exchange, the 97th Medical Group, and the Altus Town Square.

“The Band of the West team was friendly and professional,” said Col. Judy Rattan, 97th Medical Group commander. “Even though we all had masks on, I saw many smiling eyes, and lots of applause.”

During the performances, Airmen and their families gathered around to request Christmas carols from the band.

“Events like this give us all a much needed boost of holiday cheer,” said Rattan. “I can’t emphasize enough the need for camaraderie and morale. They brought a real holiday spirit to a group of medics who really needed it, and truly appreciated it!”

The Airmen assigned to the band are highly-trained professional musicians who have dedicated themselves to serving their country through music.

“This was my first time in Altus and I was very impressed with how much responsibility such a small installation carries,” said Tech. Sgt. Denise Cardona Santos, U.S. Air Force Band of the West clarinetist. “We really enjoy coming out and performing Christmas carols to support those who are serving and wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year.”
