Commissaries offer farmers market events in June, July Published June 26, 2013 By Sallie Cauthers Defense Commissary Agency FORT LEE, Va. -- Fresh produce in a farmers market atmosphere is scheduled to return to the Altus AFB Commissary June 28-30. "Our farmers market events contributed to record produce sales last year with a 2.22 percent increase," said Bridget Bennett Defense Commissary Agency's produce manager. Once again, many of DeCA's stores have invited local farmers to participate and speak with customers about their products. "This is the third year the commissaries are offering a worldwide-focused produce sale," said Joyce Chandler, DeCA's perishable division chief. "It's perfect timing because this is the time of year we stock up on all our customers' favorites like watermelons, strawberries, corn on the cob, peaches, summer squash and tomatoes." "We have also expanded the event from one weekend to one month based on customer demand," Chandler added. "We offer our customers the highest quality produce at the lowest prices possible. This makes your commissary definitely worth the trip, especially if you're stocking up on summer celebrations." This year, the exchanges and Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs will be partnering with commissaries during farmers' market events at some of the military installations, creating a festive, country-style event. Commissary customers should check their base news outlets for more details on any local events connected with their commissary's farmers market.
