Altus AFB and community to join efforts in POW/MIA remembrance ceremony Published Sept. 4, 2012 By 1st Lt. Katie L. Cousins 97th Air Mobility Wing ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Altus Air Force Base, local law enforcement and emergency services in the City of Altus are joining efforts to conduct a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) and 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony Sept. 21, 2012, at the Jackson County Courthouse in downtown Altus. In addition to the Remembrance Ceremony, service members will participate in a 24-hour remembrance run beginning Sept. 20, 2012, honoring past and present prisoners of war, those missing in action, and those who lost their lives protecting this nation. On Sept. 21, a small formation of roughly 15 service members are scheduled to run from the base track to the Jackson County Courthouse, approximately 3.5 miles, and will pass the POW/MIA flag to a larger formation of roughly 100 Airmen at the courthouse. The larger formation will run the flag back to the base track where the 24-hour run will conclude at 4:30 p.m. Altus AFB and the City of Altus would like to welcome community members to be a part of the ceremony and remembrance run by running in a second formation from the courthouse to the base entrance. Both runners and walkers are welcome and are advised to wear comfortable athletic attire. Individuals attending the ceremony and/or run should be at the Jackson County Courthouse at 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 21. Transportation back to the courthouse will be provided.
