Big changes coming for Altus AFB e-mail and network Published Dec. 21, 2011 By Airman1st Class Kenneth W. Norman 97th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Air Force Network migration for Altus AFB will begin Feb. 13, which will consolidate the computer network infrastructure on base. The overall goal of the AFNet migration project is to consolidate all existing Major Commands, Field Operating Agencies, Direct Reporting Units, Geographically Separated Unit networks, e-mails and directories service environments into a single, centrally managed Active Directory structure within the AFNet. Users will experience a variety of benefits once migrations are complete. "E-mail addresses will now be us.af.mil instead of altus.af.mil," said Staff Sgt. Marisol I. Alvarez, 97th Communication Squadron information technology specialist. After Altus AFB has been migrated to the AFNet, if a service member has a permanent change of station to a base that has also been migrated, their e-mail address will not change." The same goes for Temporary Duty locations and deployments. "If a user is going TDY to a location that has migrated, they will no longer need to use a Virtual Private Network," Alvarez said. "They will have access to their e-mail and applications during TDY, deployment or PCS." There are a few steps users can take to make the migration processes smoother. "Check your name and details in the Global Address Listing to ensure it is accurate [name, unit, address, phone number, and all other information]," Alvarez said. "If any information requires updates, please contact your Computer System Administrator. Also, decrease the size of your exchange mailbox by purging deleted items, archiving sent items and deleting unwanted e-mails." Some users may be skipped over when the initial migration takes place. "If a user's inbox is over the size limit when the migration happens Feb. 13, then their computer will not migrate and they will need to contact us to get their computer migrated," Alvarez said. If more information becomes available a follow-up article will be released 30 days prior to AFNet migration. For more information, contact Staff Sgt. Marisol Alvarez at 481-1271.
