Altus Air Force Base is celebrating Alternate Transportation Day Oct. 29.

October is Energy Awareness month. To highlight the efforts made during the month, 97th Air Mobility Wing commander, Col. Jon Ty Thomas, designated October 29 as Alternate Transportation Day for the base.

"The idea that there is a better away for us to move is important. Whether it's a hybrid vehicle, whether it's a bicycle, whether it's walking, we need to continue work with our fellow Americans on finding a way to move beyond a petroleum based economy and petroleum based sources of energy because we know that's going to run out. We're going to do our best here at Altus Air Force Base to continue working towards that goal, and that's what Oct. 29 is all about."

"I will, if the weather's good, ride my bike. If it's not so good, then I don't know. I may have to walk with an umbrella," said Colonel Thomas.

On October 29, members of the base community are encouraged to walk, ride bikes, or car pool to get to work. For more information on Energy Awareness month, or Alternate Transportation Day, please call 481-6221.To read the Wing commander's proclamation, click here.
