National concerns about food source safety, including recent egg recalls and deli meats contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, are not a problem for Altus Air Force Base.

"We receive Department of Defense Hazardous Food and Non-Prescription Drug Recall System (US DoD) announcements and vendor recall information from our headquarters point of contact, which identifies products that are potentially unsafe. Our personnel research the product to see if it is one that is identified and if so it's pulled and placed on medical hold for the sales representative to pick up or destroy on site," said Lori K Stevens, supply technician at the Altus AFB Commissary.

Although eggs tainted with salmonella enteritidis have been found in Oklahoma, none have been found at the Altus AFB Commissary.

"We have not found any eggs that are affected by the recall at the commissary as of yet. Our egg contractor is Rose Acres Farms and they have not been identified by the recall. The Egglands Best eggs are a Farm Fresh product which was identified by the recall but the Egglands Best variety were not covered by the plant numbers referenced in the recall at this time," said Stevens.

The Defense Commissary Agency does not carry the deli meats currently under recall, and stores that have identified the brand in question have removed the product from their shelves.

Stevens encourages those interested in the Commissary food safety procedures and guidelines to call the Altus Commissary for more information, 481-6529 or visit the website, http://www.commissaries.com/stores/html/store.cfm?dodaac=HQCMCP&page=news.

"...we do an excellent job keeping our patrons safe," said Stevens.
