Nominations are being accepted for the Air Force Athlete of the Year at Altus Air Force Base through September 10.

"We have had two to six nominees over the last few years," said Jeremy Stevens, director of the Altus Fitness Center, 97th Force Support Squadron.

The nomination packet requires basic personal information and descriptions of outstanding performance and/or records achieved during the nomination period of Oct. 1, 2009 through Sept. 30, 2010. Nominees are also required to provide a color 5-by-7 inch official photograph.

"I was shocked, but very honored to have won this award," said Master Sgt. Karrie Warren, security and requirements supervisor at Tyndall's 601st Air and Space Operations Center and the 2009 female Air Force Athlete of the Year. "I strive to do my best whether it's at my job or in sports, and to even be nominated is something I will treasure for the rest of my life."

"Getting into competitive sports is easy," said Captain Ian Holt, 319th Missile Squadron command post missile combat crew commander and 2009 male Air Force Athlete of the Year. "Just jump into one. It's not necessary to be at the top of a sport to have fun either. Just remember that it takes determination and dedication to get to athlete of the year."

From the base level, Altus' top athletes (male and female) will represent the base at the Air Education and Training Command level, and from there, the Air Force level. Winners are announced early in the new year, around January 2011.

"When an individual is applying for this they need to list all the previous experience they have in (a) sport," Stevens said. "It never hurts to apply - you never know unless you try."
