Staff Sgt. Jonathan Wanglund, Altus AFB NCO of the Quarter!

ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. --  Staff Sgt. Jonathan Wanglund is the Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter for Altus Air Force Base.

As an Instructor at Altus' Airman Leadership School, he led accredited enlisted professional military education for Altus and Vance Air Force Bases; 28 students in 3,192 hours of classroom and contact time earning a total of 252 Community College of the Air Force credit hours through his instruction. He was the sole PME instructor for two Airman Leadership School classes, teaching 76 lessons; this effort filled a void during the school's leadership transition and created 28 supervisory senior Airmen, according to his nomination package.

During this time, he also mentored and counseled failing students. Working with him, 16 students refocused themselves and remediated their work to require no removals from school for academic failure. Sergeant Wanglund also launched a student survey program for Air University's enlisted PME program; the results exceeded standards by 140 percent and the vital data gathered will shape future curriculum, according to his nomination package.

Sergeant Wanglund is invested in his base and the local community; he organized six volunteers at two checkpoints for the Gen. Tommy Franks Freedom Ride. This fostered safety for 250 riders. A member of the Warrior 5/6 Council, he served as treasurer and was responsible for a $1000 budget; in this capacity, he led a four-person team during the Wings of Freedom Open House and Air Show to raise $700, which was used to support enlisted events base wide. Personally, he volunteered four hours to set-up chairs, booths, kids' events, and a concert stage for the Year of the Air Force Family celebration May 1. This directly contributed to a first-class event for over a thousand Airmen and their families, according to his nomination package.

Sergeant Wanglund holds two Associates of Applied Science from the Community College of the Air Force; one in transportation management and one as an instructor of technology of military science.

Sergeant Wanglund hails from Endwell, N.Y., where he graduated from Maine Endwell high school, and where he still has family. He credits his award to the sustenance of his wife, son, and daughter here in Altus, and his family in New York.
