2nd Lt. James J. Six wins quarterly award Published May 11, 2010 By Senior Airman Cherice Bryant 97th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- 2nd Lt. James J. Six, a Civil Engineer assigned to the 97th Civil Engineering Squadron, won Company Grade Officer of the quarter, Jan-Mar 2010. "I would like people to know that this award is not only a recognition of me, but should be a recognition to my unit, particularly the enlisted in the squadron who get the job done no matter what, day in and day out", Six said. Some of the achievements he accomplished during the first of the year were the planning of the Digital Airport Surveillance Radar/Radar Approach Control groundbreaking and various other wing agency events. He facilitated contingency and disaster planning, and prepped for real world contingencies. He worked exceptionally hard on the base cleanup after the ice storm by coordinating the disposition of dead trees, and working the night shift during Ice Station Zebra. His efforts during this mission helped to restore the base morale and image. Six also displayed self-improvement by maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA while pursuing his Master's degree in Ancient History at the American Military University. In addition to this, he demonstrated being combat focused by acquiring professional training on the M9 and M4 during personal time. Six is also an active volunteer in his squadron, as well as the community. He had participated in donation drives, squadron teams and competitions and various extracurricular activities that further his own development and development of those around him. Six's volunteer work within the community includes being a leader with a local church and a volunteer for the Adopt-a-Highway program. His contributions within the community and on base have helped to foster a positive image for Air Force. "I would recommend putting yourself out there and getting involved, both on and off duty. I was told when I commissioned, 'Behold the turtle, he only moves forward when he sticks his neck out,' and I try to use that concept every day", said Six. "I credit the award to my wife Sara, who is an Air Battle Manager up at Tinker AFB, 964th Airborne Air Control Wing for supporting me, and to my co-workers as everything we do, we do as a team."
