Now is the time to prepare for winter Published Nov. 5, 2008 By Kevin Chandler 97th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Although it seems as though winter will never make it to southwest Oklahoma, cold temperatures will soon be here. The 97th Air Mobility Wing ground safety office has provided information to help residents prepare their homes for winter weather. The following home improvements are easy and can be done without spending much money. These projects include: · Installing door sets on exterior doors can stop draft and prevent slamming. On older homes, door sets can compensate for warped or sagging doors. Replacing thresholds or installing door bottoms will also help seal exterior doors. · Insulating pipes, ducts and water heaters will ensure maximum efficiency at minimum utility costs. · Use self-sticking weatherstrip tape or caulk to seal windows and other narrow openings. Plastic sheeting can be put on window interiors to further prevent drafts and leaks. · Gutters should be cleaned of leaves and other debris. Drainpipe extensions can be fitted to route water away from the home's foundation. · Garden hoses should be disconnected and wrapped up to keep them from freezing and cracking. Taking the proper steps to winterize your house will keep your home warm and your wallet full. For additional tips or winter safety information call 481-7233.
