Military members looking to cross train into a challenging and rewarding career field may apply to be an Air Force Office of Special Investigations special agent.

Senior airmen with less than six years time in service, staff sergeants through master sergeants with outstanding records and fewer than 12 years of military service are eligible. Security forces members in the grades of staff sergeant select through master sergeant are eligible. Senior airmen must be in their cross training window -- 35 to 38 month for four-year enlistees and 59 to 62 month for six-year enlistees. Members must have at least 18 months time-on-station, which is waiverable.

Officers must have less than 12 years Total Active Federal Military Service and less than six years Total Active Federal Commission Service to apply. AFPC must agree to release officer applicants in order to apply. Applicants with foreign language, computer and technical skills are among those highly sought after by the AFOSI.

Every special agent is a volunteer. All agents attend fifteen weeks of specialized training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga., where they learn how to investigate crimes against persons and property; base-level contract fraud, and threats to Air Force information systems and technologies. Finally, agents learn the critical aspect of exploiting and reporting the details of terrorist and intelligence threats to the United States and coalition forces.

"Being an OSI agent is a very diverse and enjoyable job due to the fact no two days are the same" said Special Agent Tony Hayes, AFOSI, Det. 422. "One day I might be working a rape or drug case and the next day I might be working a fraud or counterintelligence issue; diversity like that is what keeps the job interesting and challenging."
