Base Legal Office to offer tax assistance

ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. --  The Base Legal Office will offer tax assistance for active-duty servicemembers (including guard and reserve) and their dependents. Tax assistance will also be provided to military retirees and federal civilian employees on a space available basis.
Tax assistance will be offered by volunteers, who will begin accepting appointments beginning Feb. 1.

The legal office will not be stocking tax forms. Federal tax forms are available online at www.irs.gov or through the individual online state tax sites which are available at the legal office. 

Taxpayers need to bring the following items to the VITA sites to have their tax returns prepared: 

· Photo identification
· Social Security cards for the taxpayer, their spouse, and dependents, if applicable
· Birth dates for primary and secondary earners and dependents on the tax return
· Current year's tax package if they received one
· Wage and earning statements (W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R forms) from all employers
· Interest and dividend statements from banks (1099 forms)
· A copy of last year's federal and state returns if available
· Bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit
· Other relevant information about income and expenses
· Total amount paid for day care
· Day care providers identifying number (tax ID or SSN)

Free "do-it-yourself" federal tax preparation and e-filing are also available through Military One Source, www.militaryonesource.com, or by calling 1-800-342-9647. The Web site utilizes a free version of H&R Block software for military members. The software is a simple question and answer program that is a quick and easy way to complete and e-file federal taxes without fees. State returns can also be accomplished and e-filed for a small fee at this site.

Those with a MyPay account may view their W-2 online by logging on to the MyPay Web site.

Those eligible to receive tax assistance may contact any of the volunteers listed below for assistance and information on what documents must be provided at the appointment.
