Health Promotion to host free running class on base Published May 19, 2015 By Airman 1st Class Nathan Clark 97th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- An efficient running class is scheduled for June 3. The class will be held 1-3 p.m. in the Cimarron room of the Freedom Community Center and will be led by U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Antonio Eppolito, Chief of Air Force telehealth and telemedicine. Eppolito is a five-time Air Force Half-Marathon Masters champion and a 19-year member of the United States Air Force Running Team. "The first portion of the class is an in-class presentation in the FCC and the second part will beĀ practical application to help people with their technique, either in the gym or outside, depending on the weather," said Gayle Kenyon, 97th Medical Operations Squadron, Health Promotion coordinator. The class is open to everyone on base and is free. Those attending should bring or come in clothes and shoes appropriate for running; for military members, physical training uniforms are optional. "People interested in coming can sign up by calling or registering on the sign-in sheet at the fitness center," said Kenyon. "If for some reason you can't do any of those options, we won't turn away any walk-ins." "With all the changes that have been taking place, careers depend on fitness, so we're trying to get people some help to improve their running and get them ready for PT tests," said Kenyon. "It's also for anyone who wants to establish a healthier lifestyle and become more active." The class will discuss aerobic development, how to prevent injuries, how to do drills for strength and mobility and is open to all skill levels, said Kenyon. "Eppolito can tailor to individual's needs. It'd be appropriate for a novice as well as experienced runners." "We currently have about 30 people signed up, but I'd like to see 40 or 50 people," said Kenyon. "We're designed for movement," said Kenyon. "This is one piece of our healthy lifestyle initiative. You need to look at the big picture of your lifestyle and make small steps to improve your quality of life and this is one of many you make." To sign up for the class, call Gayle Kenyon at 580-481-5647 or sign up at the fitness center front desk.
