Critical Days of Summer campaign begins Published May 22, 2014 By Airman 1st Class J. Zuriel Lee 97th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Altus AFB kicks off the Critical Days of Summer campaign May 23, 2014. The campaign, scheduled to run through Sept. 2, 2014, is themed "Double Checks, Not Second Thoughts" to emphasize the importance of taking care of yourself and your wingman. The campaign educates Airmen and their families on how to remain safe while enjoying their summer activities and focuses on taking the necessary precautions before, during and after activities to prevent any avoidable mishaps, according to U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Christopher Huffer, 97th Air Mobility Wing ground safety technician. Altus AFB started the campaign early this year with special visits from Earl the Safety Squirrel and safety representative visits to various squadron functions. The goal for this year's campaign is to have zero preventable mishaps. Airmen are encouraged to consider risks that are involved with planned activities. "In the long run it helps," said Huffer. "Try to identify some of the risks involved and take steps to mitigate or prevent causing a mishap." Huffer also noted that Airmen should take steps to prepare before traveling. Getting adequate rest and switching drivers on long-distance trips can prevent drivers from falling asleep behind the wheel. Other safety tips he offered included talking with supervisors about plans, listening attentively to safety briefs and driving defensively.
