U.S. Air Force Col. Bill Spangenthal, 97th Air Mobility Wing commander, signed a proclamation March 26, 2014 that officially designates April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month here at Altus AFB.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is recognized nationally and is intended to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent it.

"The proclamation signing is a great way to get base leaders involved and help show the importance of the topic," said Cheryl Jones, 97th AMW sexual assault response coordinator.

Throughout the month of April, the base will host a number of events to help gain support and spread awareness of current topics and issues.

The following activities are open to base members and their families this year:

April 2 - 5K Fun Run at the Fitness Center

April 5 - Distribute SAPR bags at commissary

April 10 - Reading Sam's Story at the Child Development Center

April 12 - ACMI House Walk a Mile at the Altus Court House

April 14 - Self-Defense Workshop at the Fitness Center

April 17 - Reading Sam's Story at the Child Development Center

April 23 - Poetry for Healing at Club Altus

April 28 - SAPR Stand Down Day
