The 97th Air Mobility Wing commander, vice commander, and command chief met with Altus AFB group commanders and superintendents in the wing conference room to redefine the wing's strategic plan Nov. 18-19, 2013.

At his first commander's call, U.S. Air Force Col. William Spangenthal, the commander of the 97th, talked to Airmen about the importance of the mission, taking care of Airmen and their families. The goal of the meeting was to align the wing's strategic plan with the commander's priorities: Mission, Airmen and Family.

Strategy experts from Air Education and Training Command's Strategy Management and Continuous Process Improvement office led the workshop via teleconference.

"Wing leadership looked at three basic areas and made them objectives in the wing's strategy plan: Execute the mission safely, timely, effectively and efficiently; Cultivate Airmen; and Provide quality support to our Airmen and their families," said U.S. Air Force Capt. Jared Gilmer, 97th strategy manager.

Spangenthal challenged his staff to contemplate exactly what the three objectives mean.

"Wing leadership came up with description points and initiatives needed to ensure the wing is accomplishing the commander's objectives," Gilmer said. "The new strategy plan will provide the tools necessary to effectively evaluate how we are meeting the commander's goals."

The group carefully defined the description points, initiatives, and keys of success to best communicate the goals of the strategy plan with the rest of the wing.

"The senior leadership team is focused on developing and supporting our Total Force Airmen and their families," Spangenthal said. "Clearly defined objectives, robust programs and focused initiatives will leverage the skills and innovation of our Airmen to ensure mission success."

Airmen can expect to see the new strategy plan and strategy map early next year.
