The 97th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department hosted National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8 - 15, 2013.

"Fire Prevention Week gives fire departments the opportunity to focus national attention on the importance of fire safety," said Billy Allday, 97th Civil Engineer Squadron fire inspector.

During Fire Prevention Week, firefighters hosted various events to teach members of the community about the importance of fire safety and some of the aspects of a fireman's job, to include educational fire prevention classes, a fire muster competition, and an open house at the fire department.

"One of the main events was the fire safety training at Lucius Mendel Rivers Elementary School," said Allday. "Children were able to participate in an interactive scenario that taught the children the basic steps to keeping themselves safe during a kitchen fire. We also hosted the fire muster competition and the commander and first sergeant firefighter training. The events gave a glimpse of some of the obstacles that firefighters go through during training."

Fire Prevention Week was an experience many members of the 97th Air Mobility Wing benefited from.

"Everyone from the wing commander down learned a bit from this week's events," said Allday. "This year's Fire Prevention Week turned out to be a fun and educational experience that taught everyone to be a little safer when it comes to fire prevention."
