New cyclist PPE requirements Published Oct. 10, 2013 By Senior Airman Dillon Davis 97th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Air Force Safety Center has revised Air Force Instruction 191-207 as of Sept. 12, 2013, which governs traffic safety on installation roadways. The revision to the AFI includes additional requirements for cyclist personal protective equipment. Here is the complete list of new requirements: · During daytime - highly visible outer garment · During hours of darkness - outer garment containing retro-reflective material · Properly fastened bicycle helmet that is ANSI or Snell approved · If worn, backpacks must have reflective material or be fitted with reflective belt · White headlight visible from a minimum of 500 feet · Red tail reflector or taillight visible from a minimum of 300 feet The new regulations apply to all cyclists that ride on any Air Force installation roadways. "We want to promote safety for everyone to continually decrease and prevent mishaps from happening," said Mike Matthews, 97th Air Mobility Wing ground safety manager. The 97th Safety Office would like base members to collectively ensure that everyone is safe both on and off base.
