The 97th Civil Engineer Squadron Pest Management shop will begin fogging for mosquitoes, June 6, 2019 at Altus Air Force Base, Okla. Fogging operations will take place Monday through Friday between the hours of 3-6 a.m. on the main base.

Remember to limit all movement during the times identified for fogging. If you must be outside during that time and you see the fogging truck, please go in the nearest building for about 30 to 45 minutes after the fogging truck has left your area or until the fog has dissipated.

CAUTION: The pesticide used to fog for mosquitoes is harmful if absorbed through the skin or ingested. If it gets in your eyes, it can cause temporary eye irritation. Prevent these problems by avoiding contact with skin, eyes or clothing. In case of contact, flush the affected area with plenty of water. Also, be sure to remove and wash contaminated clothing before reuse, and wash and/or shower thoroughly with soap and water before eating, drinking, chewing gum or using tobacco. If pesticide gets in your eyes, open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15-20 minutes. If present, remove contact lenses. If necessary, contact the Poison Control Center at (800) 222-1222 for more information.

If you see the fogging vehicle at night or in the early morning hours and there is a mist coming from green nozzle in the back, take the following precautions:

  • If you are in a vehicle and you must go the direction the fogging truck is moving, roll up your windows, turn on your air conditioner and make sure it is on recirculate
  • If you are driving in an open vehicle with no top, such as a jeep or convertible, do not drive through the fog or follow the truck. If possible, find a different route or stop your vehicle, find a parking spot and wait for the fog to leave the area
  • If you are on a motorcycle or bicycle, do not drive through the fog or follow the truck. If possible, find a different route or stop your motorcycle or bicycle, find a parking spot and wait for the fog to leave the area
  • If you are out walking or jogging, do not walk or jog through the fog. If possible, find another route or go back into the nearest building and wait for the fog to leave the area
  • If you are outside taking a smoke break and you see the fogging truck in your area, stop smoking and go inside the nearest building immediately. You can resume your smoke break in about 30 to 45 minutes. Pesticide fumes can enter the smoker’s lungs system through the cigarette while they are smoking
  • Base personnel who are pregnant should stay away from the pesticide at all times. If they are working, they should report to duty before fogging operations begin and are not allowed outside until one hour after fogging operations have been completed

If you have any specific questions concerning mosquito fogging operations, contact the 97th CES Customer Service Desk at 481-6606. They will take your question and forward it to the 97th CES Pest Management shop and someone will contact you as soon as possible with an answer.
