Altus native Dr. Joe Leverett was selected for the Chief of Staff's Air Force Civic Leader Program by the Air Force Nov. 10.

The Chief of Staff's Air Force Civic Leaders are advisors, key communicators and advocates for Air Force issues. They provide ideas and feedback to advise the secretary of the Air Force, Air Force chief of staff and Air Force senior leaders about how missions can best be accomplished in their respective areas and about public attitudes toward the Air Force and Air Force activities in their areas, according to the AFCLP fact sheet.

"I am both honored and humbled to be appointed to the Air Force Civic Leader program. I have had great mentors like my father, Dick Moore, and Burley Burleson, who helped me tremendously," Dr. Leverett said.

When he's not practicing medicine, Dr. Leverett serves as chairman of the Altus Military Affairs Committee and as a commissioner on the Oklahoma Strategic Military Planning Commission. He was an organizer for the "Make Altus Progressive" initiative and an ex officio member of the Altus Chamber of Commerce.

"I am thrilled Dr. Leverett has been accepted into the Air Force Civic Leader Program," said Col. Ty Thomas, 97th Air Mobility Wing commander. "He has been the honorary wing commander here for more than three years and is an active leader in our local community. He is well deserving of this honor and we are proud he was chosen by General Schwartz to serve as an Air Force Civic Leader."

Air Force civic leaders serve as a civilian interface between the Air Force and the civilian community. In this role, Air Force Civic Leaders explain and interpret Air Force programs, positions, and problems to other key, local communicators through personal contact and correspondence, and to the general public through statements, appearances and speeches. Air Force civic leaders are flexible in outreach efforts, which may include speeches, articles, and local, regional, state, and national activities, according to the AFCLP fact sheet.

"This appointment is a reflection of the hard work the entire Altus Community and Military Affairs Committee has done for over 50 years to support Altus Air Force Base. I am also blessed to have a wonderful wife who supports me in all these activities. I will do my best to represent our community, our base, and Air Education Training Command as their representative on the Civic Leader team," Dr. Leverett said.
