Melissa Laub earns scholarship

ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla --  Melissa Laub of Altus Air Force Base was one of eight students Air Force wide awarded a $2500 Balfour Beatty Community Foundation Scholarship this summer.

The Balfour Beatty Community Foundation awarded 21 scholarships in 2010. Laub won her award July 15. There were eight $2500 scholarships and 13 $1000 scholarships.

To achieve this scholarship, Melissa had to meet the following requirements:
  • Live in a Balfour Beatty Community
  • Have a parent in the Service
  • Be a high school senior or an undergraduate student
  • Hold a GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Participation in extracurricular activities
  • Provide recommendations from teachers and or coaches
  • Write a 500-1000 word essay
  • Submit the application and all related materials no later than April 15th
Laub's extracurricular activities and awards include the Oklahoma University Pre-Pharmacy Association, Altus High School Valedictorian, President of Altus High School National Honors Society among other prestigious awards. Laub also works as a pharmacy technician at Oklahoma University.

"Being involved in extracurricular activities, leadership positions and getting good grades throughout high school and college," said Laub, when asked what she credited her award to.

"I think it's great," said Melissa's father, Master Sgt. Douglas Laub, 97th Operations Group.

"We are so pleased that Melissa was one of the BBC foundation's grant recipients. We truly wish her much success as she begins her studies. We hope next year that more students from Altus will apply," said Kathy Grim, communication manager for BBC.

Melissa Laub was born Willingboro, New Jersey. She graduated from Altus High School in 2008 and plans to graduate with honors in health sciences and a minor in chemistry and then attend pharmacy school at the University of Oklahoma pharmacy school.
