The Altus Air Force Base supply center is recognizing the 20th Anniversary of its AbilityOne base supply centers by highlighting the workplace capabilities of people who are blind and the positive impact they are making to support our armed forces. Since the program’s inception, the Altus AFB supply center and the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind have provided meaningful employment and career opportunities for 250 people who are blind throughout Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

To commemorate the anniversary, the Altus AFB supply center will be hosting a customer appreciation day on Oct. 30, 2015 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to say thanks to those who we are fortunate to be able to support. Please stop by building 298 to take a tour of our facility and enjoy some homemade chili and refreshments.

Launched in 1995, AbilityOne base supply centers fill a gap faced by a number of military bases across the country that lacked on-site supply stores. Base supply centers, including the Altus AFB branch help meet this need while also creating job opportunities for people who are blind or severely disabled. Today, the retail-type stores provide government customers with convenient access to thousands of high-quality, competitively-priced products and other services. We are proud of our years of service not only helping our troops, but also providing opportunities for people who are blind to gain independence and learn valuable job skills.

The Altus AFB supply center is one of 152 AbilityOne base supply centers nationwide. The San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind works with National Industries for the Blind and operates 14 stores on military installations across Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. The NIB is the nation’s largest employment resource for people who are blind. The NIB and its associated nonprofit agencies employ 5,600 people who are blind nationwide.

“The success of our Base Supply Centers over the past two decades demonstrates the tremendous value people who are blind bring to the workplace,” said Kevin Lynch, NIB CEO. “We are proud to continue working with Base Supply Centers such as the Altus BSC to expand job opportunities for people who are blind, as well as supporting our troops.”

Thanks for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at our Customer Appreciation Day.
