April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and the Altus Air Force Base Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office is hosting several free events throughout the month.

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is dedicated in raising awareness to the public about sexual violence and how to prevent it.

“My Story, Your Actions” is scheduled to be held on April 20, at 9 a.m. in the Family Community Center. Participants will hear stories of abuse from across the Department of Defense from anonymous writers and how those closest to them helped them or not.

“This event really helps those who have been assaulted know that they’re not alone,” said Cheryl Jones, 97th Air Mobility Wing sexual assault response coordinator. “The stories let others know from the victim’s perspective what hurt them and what helped them.”

The next base event scheduled is a candle light ceremony held at Wings of Freedom Park at 7:30 p.m. on April 28, in remembrance of survivors of sexual assault.

On April 29, at the Altus Reservoir, the base SAPR office will be cohosting the 7th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event from 4-6 p.m. There will be free food and drink as well as door prizes. Male volunteers walk around in a pair of red high heels to represent women struggles. Other activities include a basic self-defense class and a basketball tournament.

“A lot of people don’t know how they can help this cause,” said Jones “Coming out and showing support is a great first step in helping.”
