Altus Memorial Day service

ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. – Col. Wyn Elder, 97th Air Mobility Wing vice commander, speaks to Airmen along with Altus community members at the Altus Veteran of Foreign Wars post 4876 May 30 2011 about paying respect to those who died while serving in the military. Memorial Day began as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War. By the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not.
