Altus Memorial Day service

ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. – Airmen from Altus AFB and Altus community members attend a Memorial Day service May 30 2011 at the Altus cemetery and pay respect to military members who died while serving their country. Memorial Day began as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War. By the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory as people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not.
