75th Anniversary

The Army Airfield closed near the end of World War II and re-opened as Altus Air Force Base in January 1953. Initially, the base served under Tactical Air Command but shortly thereafter was re-assigned to Strategic Air Command with the primary mission of long range bombing and air refueling. The photo shows the cover of the welcome book issued to new arrivals. The book contained a list of facilities, hours of operation and a map.
