A KC-97 Stratotanker refuels a B-47 Stratojet in this mid-1950s photograph. With the radial engines of the tanker and maximum and the jet engines of the bomber at the minimum for flight the duo flew a delicate dance to transfer fuel. Often, the tandem would dive and climb to maintain equal speeds, called “tobogganing.” It was not until the arrival of the KC-135 Stratotanker would the flights maintain level flight.
