From 1963 to 1965, 12 Atlas âFâ missile sites surrounded a 40-mile circle around Altus AFB. The liquid fueled, intercontinental nuclear capable missiles crewed by the men of the 577th Strategic Missile Squadron. During this 2-year span, Altus AFB flew the B-52 Stratofortress and the KC-135A Stratotanker under the command of the 11th Strategic Aerospace Wing. Many of the missile sites can still be seen in the area, without the missiles of course.
