In the late 1960s, Altus Air Force Base, transitioned from a strategic to an airlift mission. In early 1969 the first C-141 Starlifters arrived followed by the gigantic C-5 Galaxy. This photo shows the front of a C-5 and the two control towers on the flightline in the early 1970s. The shorter tower was sufficient from 1953 to 1969 but with the arrival of the C-5 it was not tall enough to see over the tail of the aircraft. The new tower allowed the personnel to see over the tail to safely direct the aircraft on the parking ramp.
