ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. --
The Bureau of Land Management wildland fire branch will be conducting a prescribed burn near Altus AFB main gate for a 22-acre prairie restoration project between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Feb. 17, 2026.
The prescribed burn will last between 4 to 6 hours and will utilize the wind to minimize any impact to the adjacent highway.
Residents of base housing should expect to see smoke and are advised to stay inside during the time of the burn. Please keep all doors and windows closed and limit outdoor activities while the burn is active. Smoke impacts will be temporary and should lessen as operations conclude. Controlled burns are an essential land management tool used for prairie restoration and wildfire prevention, supporting ecosystem restoration and lowering the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.
