The Altus AFB Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program is scheduled to officially open February 11, 2013, but filers may sign-up now for assistance during the 2012 Tax Year season.

The VITA Program assists active-duty service members, dependents, retirees, and federal civilian employees with income tax preparation. The program is run entirely by volunteers who will meet with filers to complete their returns using Internal Revenue Service certified e-filing software.

Filers who would like assistance need to complete an IRS Form 13614-C, Intake/Interview & Quality Review Sheet, which can be downloaded from IRS.gov (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f13614c.pdf) or picked up at the base legal office. Once completed, the hard copy of the form must be dropped off in the base legal office located in Suite 1701 of Building 52. After submitting their intake sheet, filers will be contacted by the volunteer assigned to prepare their return to meet for an in-person interview to go over the filer's tax documents and prepare the return.

Certain tax issues are outside the scope of the VITA Program. Filers will be notified if the VITA program is unable to assist them.

While taxpayers will not be assigned a volunteer until February 11, they may submit their intake forms now for consideration in the program. Taxpayers can prepare themselves for the tax filing season by gathering all the information they will need to participate in the program, including:

· Official documentation of Social Security Numbers or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
· Bank routing information for direct deposit or debit
· Forms W-2
· Forms 1099 and other income statements
· Amount of any income not reported on a statement
· Forms 1098, 1098-T, and 1098-E
· Records with amounts of deductible and qualified expenses not shown on a statement
· Childcare provider information (name, address, and SSN/Employer Identification Number)
· Receipts, statements and other required documentation for credits and deductions
· Last year's tax returns

"The VITA Program provides a critical service in ensuring that members of the military community have access to skilled, certified tax preparers who can assist with their yearly tax returns," said Capt. Joe Ahlers, 97th Air Mobility Wing Office of the Staff Judge Advocate VITA program officer in charge.
