ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. - Altus' running track is closed until mid to late September due to a 90-day construction project intended to provide for better drainage and permit use of the infield for team sports such as soccer and football.

Led by project manager Jacquelyn Henderson from the 97th Civil Engineer Squadron, the project is to eliminate large manholes, relocate the backflow preventer for the sprinkler system, remove underground valves, reutilize the storm drains in the grassy area and reconstruct and re-sod the entire field to support intramural sports and unit physical training. At present, these utilities fixtures render the field unsafe for most team sports uses.

"This has been on the commander's radar since he arrived. He wanted the field inside the track available for sports and fitness activities. With a little work, this under-used area could be used in our Fit to Fight culture." said Bron Howard, 97th Civil Engineer programs flight chief.

This improvement to the under-utilized area inside the track is an example of the culture of innovation practiced at Altus AFB. By developing the space, which is central to the base and in close proximity to dormitories and the dining facility, Altus will have another focal point to develop Airman Warriors.

"At present, our intramural team field sports are played on the softball outfield near the main gate," said Colonel Ty Thomas, 97th Air Mobility Wing Commander. "By making the track infield usable, we'll bring the sports activities closer to our Airmen, and make the games more accessible to families and spectators."

"Construction has caused a significant increase in traffic at the Fitness Center." said Aldo Sanchez, Fitness Center employee, 97th Force Support Squadron.
