The 97th Civil Engineering Squadron Fire Department are holding various Fire Prevention Week events on base throughout the week (Oct. 5 to Oct. 10) to educate and demonstrate fire safety to the community.

The week is a long running tradition and promises interactive fun for the whole family.

"For 85 years, Fire Prevention Week has been a time when fire departments across the country have placed extra emphasis on fire safety education," said Velvest Price, 97 CES Fire Protection assistant chief. "It is the longest running public safety campaign in the nation. A week long campaign is held that includes all age groups of the community. Schools are visited to try and reinforce fire safe practices to some of the most junior members of our society.

"We also hold demonstrations and other fun public events intermingled with educational topics that help stress the importance of general fire safety in the workplace and the home," he said.

Some of the events include the Fire Muster at the base track at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 9, Fire Prevention Week Parade at 9 a.m. Oct. 10 and Fire Department Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10.

"These events are planned to include helping make an impact on fire trends that are prominent around the nation," said Mr. Price. "The basic emphasis is to try and make education fun, while making our communities safer."
