Learning from experience Published May 27, 2009 By 2nd Lt Sybil Taunton 97 AMW/public affairs ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla - -- A panel of six active duty personnel ranging in rank from Airman 1st Class to Captain, accompanied by a cadet from the U.S. Military Academy, discussed their active duty experiences and answered questions for Junior Reserve Officer Training School cadets from Altus High School May 27. The question and answer session was set up as a way for the cadets taking part in the week long Summer Leadership School offered at Altus Air Force Base to learn more about the different ways they can enter the military after graduating high school. Each member of the panel offered a different experience, whether they went through basic training straight out of high school, went to college and took part in an ROTC program, or spent time as an enlisted Army Soldier and then later commissioned as an officer in the Air Force. The JROTC cadets were given in-depth descriptions of the lifestyles and opportunities they could expect from the different options available for entering the military. Cadets asked several questions ranging from what jobs would be available in the different services to how foreign languages could help them in their careers as military personnel. Each member of the panel was excited and ready to answer all questions based on their own experiences, enabling the Leadership School students to get a better understanding of the variety of options they have available to them. Col. David W. Allvin, 97th Air Mobility Wing Commander, also took part in the Leadership School by offering his perspective as a commander and answering questions presented to him by the cadets May 26.
