Big band swing, 1940s-era swag, and the aura of a trip back in time hung in the air as the 58th Airlift Squadron had the pleasure of hosting their inaugural Heritage Dining Out April 18.

The event was held in collaboration with the World War II Airborne Demonstration Team at Frederick Army Airfield.

The evening was complete with era-specific décor, vehicles from the time period and two airworthy C-47 aircraft, arranged in the Frederick Army Airfield hangar--a working repair facility built in 1942.

The 58th AS, once the 58th Troop Carrier Squadron, flew aerial resupply missions in the C-47 from 1942 to 1946. The event provided an opportunity for members 58th, alumni, their guests and distinguished visitors from across the U.S. to gather in celebration of their unit's rich heritage and induct the first members into their Hall of Fame: The Legion of the Flying Mouse.  This year's inductees were retirees Maj. Robert Wolfe, Master Sgt. William Huffman and Chief Master Sgt. Kevin Isakson (Posthumous).

"This was the perfect opportunity to honor the heroes of our squadron's history; those who have paved the way for our success today," said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Mike Peeler, the commander of the 58th.

The event was lauded as a great success by squadron members, guests, local leaders and distinguished visitors alike. The 58th AS hopes to host the event every two years, giving plenty of time for new members and their guests to pick out their best 1940s outfits and learn to swing to the sounds of Benny Goodman.
