Cell phones upgrades come and go, why not have them go to a worthy cause? The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) office is recycling unwanted cell phones and small electronics to provide donations to domestic violence and sexual assault shelters.

"I feel it is important to give back to the community," said Cheryl Jones, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response coordinator. "I have helped with domestic violence and sexual assault shelters and I know they struggle with finances and providing resources for the individuals they serve."

The program sends boxes of cell phones to a cellular recycler and will provide the donations to the Colorado Coalition for domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as other shelters.

"I have never forgotten those experiences and the donations of generous donors were often the way we were able to meet our needs," said Jones.

The limits of donations are small electronic devices such as cell phone, mp3 players, cameras, and video gaming systems.

"The proceeds from sale of the items are donated to domestic violence and sexual assault shelters. It also lessens the footprint of these items in landfills," said Jones. "Not everything is donated. Some of these small electronics may be reused to provide a resource for shelter members that may be less fortunate."

Although the donations may be small, the message is big.

"There are people who are victimized by others and I want those victims to know there are also people who want to help them heal from what has happened to them," said Jones

Donation boxes are located around the installation at: Building 52, Building 87, around the dormitory residents and the Balfour Beatty Community Center.

If you would like someone to pick up your items you may contact the SAPR office at 481-7835.
