Members of Altus Air Force Base, volunteered their off-duty time to help collect food donations from the local community in support of the 29th annual Harvest-for-the-Hungry campaign Nov. 14, 2015.

Each year, residents in the City of Altus, fill grocery sacks with non-perishable food products to donate to the Altus Community Cupboard which helps families within the local community who could use extra help during the holiday season.

This year, Airmen from Altus AFB spent a Saturday morning collecting donations from around the town and transporting the food items to a centralized storage facility where they will be sorted and delivered to families in need this holiday season.

Many of the Airmen on base have grown close to the community after being stationed here and getting to know many of the local residents.

“There are lots of times when Altus AFB requests the support of the local community and this is one of the best opportunities we have to give back to that community,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Herbert Williams, 97th Force Support Squadron NCO in charge of the Altus Air Force Base Honor Guard. “It is great to have that opportunity to give back to this community any way that I can.”

The event allowed members of Altus AFB and the City of Altus to work together to bolster community relations while serving those in need.

“Having such a small community requires a lot of joint ventures and really strengthens the community as a whole. This is the second year I have been involved with the Harvest for the Hungry and I appreciate every opportunity to help the local Community Cupboard.”

Based on past years, the campaign is expected to amount to more than 900 bags of donated food in support of the cause.
