ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- What happens when we lose power and water? It is important to have a backup plan. For this spring’s PrepareAthon the focus is on resilience and being ready. During the recent ice storm that the Altus area experienced some preparation issues appeared in the community. We were resilient, but we can better prepare our families to provide them with comfort and necessities. Are you ready for the next disaster?
The area lost power as 2.15 inches of ice accumulated and heavy winds passed through Altus. Altus Air Force Base and the City of Altus both lost power for some time. Additionally, Altus lost commercial power to the water pumps at Tom Stead Reservoir. Luckily, power was restored to the water pumps within 24 hours and Altus didn’t suffer from the lack of water. If you were here, were you and your family prepared?
The same issues can happen during tornado season or any other disaster. Some preparation tips include having enough food and water for three days per person in your family. Have emergency contact information available to let your family know you’re safe. Having a disaster kit with important numbers to call is great if your cell phones are dead or the internet is down. Basic preparation is important.
Speaking of cell phones, there are several applications on the Android and Apple market that can provide important notifications and response actions. The Air Force has the ‘Be Ready’ app and the Federal Emergency Management Agency developed an app that can provide alerts, preparation tips, and disaster resources.
