Altus gets things moving Published Oct. 8, 2008 By Senior Airman Daniel McKittrick 97th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs ALTUS AIR FORC BASE, Okla. -- Three units from the 97th Air Mobility Wing; Public affairs, Anti-Terrorism Office and Manpower, rolled up their sleeves and got to work moving desks, bookshelves, computers and whatever else they had as part of the FY2020 Department of Defense's mandate to reduce the overall facility square footage by 20 percent at Altus AFB. To meet the 2020 goal, Altus developed a Space Utilization Team to capitalize on benefits for the air force and the Airmen. The team's plan includes collocating related functions such as Airman Leadership School and First-term Airman Center, Identifying low-cost, quick fixes resulting in large square footage reductions, and Identifying new operating locations for residents working in buildings already on the "to be demolished" list. Col. David W. Allvin, 97th Air Mobility Wing commander, addressed the moves in a base-wide commanders call saying, "It's our duty to accomplish as much as possible with this move to ensure we set up the future Altus airmen for success with the reduction." When completed, the relocations presented by the Space Utilization Team and efforts already underway will reduce the footprint by 13.32 percent. The team is currently evaluating additional proposals that will reduce overall facility square foot usage by more than 15 percent 10 years prior to the 2020 deadline.
