Altus Airmen hosted a career fair for Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps high school students from Lawton, Okla. at the Freedom Community Center Nov. 14, 2013.

"The goal is to highlight the Air Force mission and different Air Force specialty codes to JROTC cadets who are considering joining the Air Force and also to other Altus Airmen considering cross-training into another career field," said Master Sgt. Craig Hawley, 97th Force Support Squadron career assistance advisor.

The JROTC students visited the different information tables to learn from Airmen who are experts in their career fields.

"This is a form of mentoring that can make a difference in a young Airman's career, whether a brand new enlistee or a cross-trainee," Hawley said.

Though not all the students were considering enlisting in the Air Force, they agreed that learning about the different AFSCs broadened their knowledge on other careers they can pursue.

"The career fair helped me understand the different jobs that people do in the Air Force and how you can use the skills you learn in the military out in the civilian world after you separate," said Hadyn Williams, a senior at McArthur High School. "I plan on going to college and this career fair helped open my eyes to other careers that I could major in."

After the career fair, the students had the opportunity to go on the flight line to view training displays of a C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft and KC-135 Stratotanker refueler, have lunch at the Solar Inn Dining Facility and watch a security forces military working dog demonstration.

"I used to think that everyone in the Air Force flew planes or worked on planes, but now I know that is not true. It was cool learning more about the Air Force and the different careers," Williams said.
