Airman and Family Readiness Center holds first 2009 town hall meeting Published Feb. 13, 2009 By Bob Murphy 97th Force Support Squadron ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Section held a Parent/School Town Hall Meeting Feb. 2, at the base Freedom Community Center. The 6 p.m. event lasted more than one and half hours with parents and Altus school officials engaging in an information exchange that will certainly produce subsequent events. Col. Noel Zamot, 97th Mission Support Group commander, opened the meeting; welcoming everyone in attendance and closed the meeting with a challenge to become more involved in the education of our children. Mr. Robert Bowers, Altus Air Force Base school liaison officer, moderated a question and answer forum after representatives of the Altus Public Schools gave three brief presentations. Mrs. Robbie Holder, Rivers Elementary School principal, discussed the 90 percent reading goal for Altus Public Schools, while Dr. Nancy Evans, Rivers Elementary School curriculum coordinator and Dr. Mark Haught, Altus High School principal presented the standardized assessments given to students recently. Dr. Evans closed the presentations with a plea for adult volunteers to assist the schools sites in a variety of ways. The parents present received information on a variety of topics from teaching students with special needs to reading programs that are available to Altus students. Response sheets were available for follow-up questions. Colonel Zamot closed the meeting with a statement on the importance of a child's education and thanking the audience including the representatives from Altus Public Schools for their participation.
