Altus AFB to break ground for KC-46 FTU Published July 30, 2014 By 010714 ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- A ground breaking ceremony for the incoming KC-46A Pegasus is scheduled to take place here Aug. 7, 2014 at 9 a.m. U.S. Air Force General Robin Rand, commander of Air Education and Training Command, and other distinguished visitors will participate in the ceremony. Altus AFB will be the Formal Training Unit for the KC-46A and is scheduled to start receiving aircraft in 2016. The KC-46A mission will be an additive mission to the installation. Altus AFB will continue training aircrew on KC-135 Stratotanker and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. The ground breaking will represent the beginning of construction for a flight training center, a fuselage training facility, aircraft maintenance unit and renovations for a squadron operations facility. The KC-46A will provide improved capability, including boom and drogue refueling on the same sortie, world-wide navigation and communication and airlift capability on the entire main deck floor. It is also capable of receiver air refueling, improved force protection and survivability and multi-point air refueling capability.
