    97 AMW Hosts AETC Deputy Commander

    The deputy commander of Air Education and Training Command, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Maj. Gen. Mark Weatherington, visited various squadrons and organizations at Altus AFB, Nov. 8, 2018 for the first time. Weatherington toured the installation to witness the innovation, capabilities and challenges of the Mighty 97th firsthand.

    97th AMW remembers Staff Sgt. Andrew Bubacz

    On November 12, 2010, the 97th Air Mobility Wing lost a valued member of our team. Staff Sgt. Andrew Bubacz was assigned to the 97th Communications Squadron while at Altus Air Force Base. Bubacz was tasked to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he made the ultimate sacrifice. Every year since then, the 97th CS has held a ceremony in his honor and the 97th AMW has named a road on base after him and dedicated a monument to his memory.

    SrA Yana Ingram enjoys helping people. As a Pharmacy Technician for the 97th Medical Group at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma, she spends her days filling prescriptions for active duty military service members, retirees, and their dependents, as well as filling orders for the hospital. By walking back and forth in the pharmacy, she averages three-to-five miles a day. She knows—she bought a Fitbit. Her customers might find it hard to believe this enthusiastic Airman came to the service from an orphanage almost 6,000 miles away.

    97 AMW Member Wins Air Force Food Service Excellence Award

    A member of the 97th Air Mobility Wing has taken home an award, not only for skills in her job, but her ability to share her knowledge with others. Managed by the Air Force Services Activity and named after one of the most influential members of the services career field, the Arthur J. Myers Food Service Excellence Award honors junior enlisted Airmen for their excellence and achievements in food service. The region two winner is none other than a member of Altus AFB, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Michelle Vi Torculas, a food services specialist assigned to the 97th Force Support Squadron.

    At the head of every unit, there is a triad of leadership: it is the commander, first sergeant and superintendent who are charged with leading, training and disciplining their Airmen who complete the mission. Commanders and first sergeants undergo formal training on handling their units, but superintendents never went through any formal training…until now.

    Water quality at Altus AFB: Testing the waters

    “The water is absolutely safe to drink. I can tell you that as the guy who takes the samples, sees the numbers and follows the science, my technicians drink the water, I drink the water, and my kids drink the water,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Austin Bennett, a bioenvironmental engineering flight commander assigned to the 97th Medical Operations Squadron.

    Pipeline to flight line

    On average, 2,200 students are trained annually at Altus AFB to expand the Air Force’s and foreign allies’ capability for global mobility reach. Those students include pilots, loadmasters and boom operators going through initial, retraining and requalification training. Of those trained, about 150 are pipeline students becoming loadmasters and boom operators for the Air Force. These students are brand new to the Air Force and haven’t even made it to their duty station yet.

    When an active shooter incident occurs, first responders are the first to take action against the adversary. With adversaries being unpredictable and constantly changing their tools and tactics, first responders must keep their skills and precision up-to-date in order to effectively respond to these threats.

    Contracting Airmen work to save the Air Force money by using smart spending techniques to get the best supplies possible at the lowest price. When contracting Airmen deploy, they fall back on their operational contracting support training.

    It is common in the military for service member to refer to each other as family members, but for two Altus Airmen, they are family by blood and service.
